While taking a class walk around downtown Fort Lauderdale, my professor assigned us the task of looking for an area that we could use as a catalyst for our urban intervention project. Rounding the corner of our school, we walked on a sidewalk that was in need of some serious attention. Some of the issues that caught my eye were the unevenness of the ground below my feet, the trees that were planted smack down in the middle of it, and other obstructions (light poles and parking meters) that made my walking experience quite unpleasant. Imagining what a person in a wheelchair would have to go through if they had come down this same pathway, troubled me.
My urban intervention was to call to attention the ADA codes that this widely used sidewalk was violating.
